The Project

This was a full roof replacement on a home whose original galvanised roof had simply run out of life. Galvanised steel relies on a zinc coating to protect it, and once that coating wears away there is no stopping the rust — it spreads, the sheets thin out, and the fixings start to corrode along with them. The owners were tired of patch repairs that never quite held and wanted a roof they could stop thinking about.

The Problems

The old galvanised roof had the classic signs of a roof well past its use-by date:

  • Widespread corrosion and rust-through — with the zinc coating gone, rust had spread across the sheets, thinning the steel and weakening the whole roof, while corroded fixings increased the risk of sheets working loose
  • Ongoing leaks and water damage — pin holes, failed laps and rusted-out fixings meant water was finding its way in, and the constant patch repairs never lasted
  • High maintenance costs — the roof needed regular rust treatment, repairs and sealing just to keep it watertight, with no end in sight
  • Poor thermal performance — with no insulation blanket and a bare metal surface, the home ran hot in summer and cold in winter, pushing up energy bills
  • Reduced street appeal — a rusted roof makes a whole home look neglected and quietly chips away at its value

What We Did

We stripped the old galvanised sheets back, checked over the structure underneath, and installed a new Colorbond roof in their place. Colorbond steel uses a multi-layer protective coating system that resists corrosion far longer than old galvanised stock and stands up much better in harsh and coastal conditions. The new continuous sheets were laid with modern flashings throughout so the roof is watertight as a system rather than relying on sealant and patches, and an insulation blanket was included to lift the home's thermal comfort year round.

The Result

The difference is hard to miss. Where there was a rusted, leaking galvanised roof, there is now a clean, continuous Colorbond finish that instantly modernises the home and lifts its street appeal. More importantly, the new roof is built to perform — it resists corrosion for decades, stays watertight without constant patching, and the insulation blanket keeps the rooms below more comfortable through both the summer heat and the winter cold. For the owners it means an end to the rust treatment and repair cycle, lower running costs, and a roof that genuinely adds value to the property rather than detracting from it.
